September Reads

September was a crazy month.

Despite how eventful the 30 days were, quite a bit of time was open for reading and listening to books. Here’s what filled my heart’s bookshelves this past month. I’d love to know what’s filling yours.

February + March Reads

“Be careful what books you read, for as water tastes of the soil it runs though, so does the soul taste of the authors that a man reads.” -John Trapp

The following books have filled my soul’s tastebuds over the past couple months. I recommend feasting on pretty much all of them.

August Reads

thumb_IMG_6344_1024.jpg

Oh, August. The month when school starts back, the temperature takes a tiny chill pill, and apparently I have more time for reading (which probably has something to do with the whole back-to-school, all-my-babies-have-left-me-during-the-week-for-the-classroom thing).

As my schedule opened up so have my bookshelves. The following are the books that filled most of my free time last month.

On Dating, Guy/Girl Friendships and Marriage

datingfriendshipmarriage

Confession: I’m writing this while wrapped in a blue Snuggie.

Lord, forgive me for all the bad thoughts I had about Snuggies before trying one.
I now realize You gave the inspiration for this
very good gift.
Love,
Your warm
 and productive daughter, Sophie

If the above hasn’t caused me to lose all credibility with you and you’re still reading, welcome aboard my journey to authenticity.

Monday Morning Munch No. 124 – For Your Reading Pleasure

smorgasbord

It’s been a little while since we did a smorgasbord blog (check out previous ones here, here and here) so let’s share some link love and get some mutual edification up in this place.

“Sell everything and buy wisdom.” -Proverbs 4:5, MSG
“A wise person knows there is something to be learned from everyone.”
“Knowledge without humility is vanity.” – A.W. Tozer

6 Costs of Real Friendships by Jen Thorn

This. All of it (especially No. 3 and 4). Straight to my heart. Check out a snippet:

Everyone has a dark side. Sin is the great equalizer and our common enemy. Friendship is designed, among other things, for growth in godliness. This means friends help each other identify and fight sin (Eccl. 4:9–12). Doing this requires you knowing their heart and them knowing yours. There must be a willingness to open up our lives and hearts and to let others in. We need to share the good, the bad, and the ugly. Intimacy must be a part of friendship, and it must go both ways.

Monday Morning Munch No. 114 – Fear and Faith

IMG_7405

“I have to trust and believe that if there was any other way for God to accomplish His will in my life (or in the people who will be affected by it through my life), He would. Look at Jesus in the Garden, ‘If there be any other way…’ but there wasn’t.” -Kristie Anyabwile

On Thursday one of my best friends and I attended the Fear and Faith panel discussion in Nashville where Kristie Anyabwile, Trillia Newbell, Jani Ortlund, Catherine Parks, Lindsay Swartz and Jen Wilkin gathered for a one night event to celebrate the release of Trillia’s new book Fear and Faith: Finding the peace your heart craves.

It was awesome.

These women open their mouth and wisdom and grace and hilarity and authenticity comes out. It’s beautiful. Below are some of my favorite quotes of the night.
